While I agree that there are a lot of Americans who could benefit from having the caloric content of their food in their faces, I worry about people with disordered eating. Having the number of calories to read can lead to a vicious cycle of counting and food-related guilt. I think what's actually more important is the nutritional information--because 300 calories is great for breakfast when you're also getting lots of protein and/or fiber. The emphasis on calories is pretty detrimental, in my opinion, when what really matters is what you're getting out of your food; because after all, food=fuel. What a great topic to bring up on WTB, though! Kudos!

i think i agree with you in spirit, olivia-- especially as the opportunity for news to make an impact gets smaller and smaller (i.e. character limits to tweets). but i think its kind of like an ever-widening bell curve-- there are probably more people who are aware of the tragedy in norway than there would have been for the same event a few years back, and perhaps we can expect more variability in people's reactions (or lack thereof) simply by virtue of a bigger population being in the know. furthermore, with the comparison of amy winehouse and the norway attacks-- i get that the disparity in the general public's fascination is frustrating, but that also has to do with how connected people felt to either subject. amy winehouse has had a media presence for years-- and one that evokes emotional reactions at that, not only through her music but also through her troubled personal history. for most people who read and heard about norway, those who were killed were probably people they had never met or known of. i think theres a psychological dimension to people's reactions to news, aside from whatever makes sense from a responsible/moral perspective.

Ismb1, I think we are making the same point. When I started thinking about my guest post I thought I would write about a specific issue and a plan for progress on it, but then talking to new college democrats it struck me that before I can start making a difference, I need to make sure I am advocating to the right audience. Avoiding "yes men" as you put it is exactly the message I wanted to convey.
I agree that change is just a word unless applied to action, but it is still a worthy goal under many circumstances. Furthermore, I think it echos what many on this blog strive for while not alienating people on a specific stance. I tried to make my post apply to everyone who is passionate about an issue, not just those who agree with me, so thats why I didn't propose any specific changes.
I hope this clears up what i was saying. Thanks for reading and I hope you keep up with We The Blog

lol So, What do you propose as the way of change? Change is mearly a buzz word that elected President Obama. As a nation, we need independent thinkers, and not "yes' men and women. Devise a plan for change, and the choir will sing!
